How to Commission Bespoke Jewellery
Begin with a short description of what you want the piece to express, a few references and your preferred way to be contacted. You do not need a finished design. Algems discusses the form, materials, budget and timing individually before a new commission is developed.
Start with meaning and use
Describe the person, occasion or idea behind the piece. A reference can be as concrete as a flower, a colour combination or a sculptural form. Explain whether you imagine a ring, necklace, pair of earrings or another object, and how you expect it to be worn or used.
Separate your essential preferences from details you are open to exploring. A meaningful colour may matter more to you than a particular gemstone; a comfortable silhouette may matter more than a specific setting. Making those priorities clear gives the conversation a useful starting point.
Use the archive to explain a direction
Choose two or three works and say what interests you in each. You might admire the flower structure of one ring and the contrasting palette of another. Naming those elements is more useful than asking for a copy of the whole piece.
Every archived work is privately held. Its photographs and material record can inform your brief, but they are not a stock listing, a price quotation or a promise that the same stones can be sourced again.
Include the practical details early
Share your location, preferred contact method, an indicative budget if you have one and any occasion date. For a wearable piece, mention fit or fastening preferences that matter to you. For an object, explain whether display, function or both are priorities.

No. A written idea and links to a few relevant works are enough to begin. You can explain which forms, colours or details appeal to you.
How much does a bespoke commission cost?
